On 17 May, the Rotary Club of Sydney celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the first meeting in Sydney. Judi Brazier, Michael and Vivienne Pusey attended the 100th anniversary dinner with approximately 200 guests.
In attendance were his Excellency Sir David John Hurley and Lady Hurley. This first Australian Rotary Club was sponsored 100 years ago by the Rotary Club of Calgary, Canada. The occasion was marked by a number of initiatives including the establishment of an Indigenous Residential College at the University of Technology Sydney that will offer supplementary tutorship, comprehensive support and modern facilities for 240 First Nation Students.
Australia Post issued a $1.10 stamp to commemorate the centenary of Rotary in Australia. The first Rotary Club in Australia met in Melbourne on 21 April 1921, with Sir John Monash a founding member. The Rotary Club of Sydney received its Charter on 1 May 1921.
The stamp design uses a typographical approach to communicate some of the philosophies and motivations behind Rotary’s work in Australia. Words such as “assist”, “humanity” and “inspire” have been shaped into a map of Australia.
